well, i got started on the 5 string earlier than expected. i dont usually start a new project untill the previous one is done but, i am waiting for the tone ring for the tenor and had nothing to do except stare at the tv. (it was 1 degree here this morning!) another reason i wanted to get started on this one is lessons. 5 string seems to be the most popular banjo these days and it is much easier to find an instructor for 5 string.
this was basically an ebay project. i bought an old pot (the kind with the holes all around for the sound to escape and a piece of maple plywood attached to the back.) sort of a modified resonator. it also has no tone ring. the top of the pot is beveled. the neck is another ebay purchase. japanese i think. nothing special at all.mahogony neck with rosewood fret board and inlaid dots and plastic nut.i had to add a dowel stick i made from cherry. just put in the 5th string tuner this morning. (that always scares me, afraid of splitting the neck-but it worked out fine.) i made a truss rod cover out of the piece of rose wood that i removed from the heel of the tenor. now i need to find some matching tuners for the peg head finish the neck and string it. it should work well enough to start lessons, everybody starts someplace.
cant wait to start learning what to do with these things i keep making! lol
