During all the years I played banjo with the Frenzy Brothers, I really only played in a few keys. Most of our fiddle tunes were in D, and I used the double C tuning capoed up to D. I also played tunes in G and A using standard tuning and capo/no capo.
For the first time, I seriously messed around with the "Cumberland Gap" tuning (f#BEAD), or should I say one of the many Cumberland Gap tunings. It was fun and amazing. Without any real effort, Liza Jane and Little Satchel started coming out of the banjo--two tunes I have heard a million times but have never played.
