I am proud to announce the release of my new Homespun Tapes Instructional DVD project Its called:"Mark Johnson teaches Clawgrass Banjo from Clawhammer to Bluegrass"
The project has just hit the streets during the last week of Dec. 2008 and I am aiming it at a broad audience of banjo players BOTH Clawhammer and Bluegrass Scruggs and melodic banjo players who want to expand their own musical concepts and who want to be more creative in their own banjo playing.
When I first picked up the banjo 37 years ago, I learned both clawhammer and Scruggs Bluegrass style of banjo playing.......I could not get enough of the sound of a Banjo!
For you Clawhammer banjo players there is lots of new ideas, new approaches to familiar tunes and hot licks to try out and have fun with. Using your existing knowledge of clawhammer banjo styles, you can use these lessons to expand and more define your own sound on the banjo learning to play up the neck , chord shapes up the neck, Rythum ideas and licks.
For Bluegrass Players, I cannot tell you how many times I have been approached by Three finger, Scruggs and Melodic Banjo players from "World Class Performer friends" to Bluegrass Festival Jamming friends asking how can they learn to play clawhammer banjo and asking questions like "How do you do that" . What they are recognizing in my music is the same principals that they use in in their own bluegrass music. Principals they already have in their head like knowledge of the fretboard, chords, timing and Forward and Backward "ROLL PATTERNS", playing back up, taking leads and "tagging musical phrases".
You can do it too!
This is what I am teaching on this new DVD that crosses over to both banjo styles and the result is a way of playing that can set you free from pattern playing and helping you to define your own style of playing.
Because, after all, that's what it is all about, learning all the basics and than taking that information and defining your own style of playing the banjo or being versitile enough to play both clawhammer and bluegrass styles.....Clawgrass!
