Help Dating Longneck Gibson RB-180

Posted by percyfam on Wednesday, September 17, 2008

I am trying to confirm the dates of three Gibson RB-180 longnecks. In checking the Gruhn/Carter list and the BanjoPhiles list they are as follows:

# 38905 (1961), # 61068 (1962), # 320814 (1965).

Could someone confirm or correct my dating of these if possible. The 1961 is of the most interest because the Gibson Banjo Shipment list shows that the first RB-180 was shipped in 1961 and there was only one shipped that year. Thanks for your help.

Hereford, I ran across a website that lists some banjo serial numbers and dates. The years are correct by the serial numbers listed. Your third banjo above is listed as a RB-175. The site link is : www.banjophiles.org/SerNumData/BowtieEraGibsons.htm   Wow, you have the only 1961 RB-180 banjo !
