Thumbs up/Thumbs Down #1 (Sept. 10, 2008)

Posted by sjyokel on Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Just an idea I had about how to share my opinion about some things I've discovered and some things I've recently discovered I don't like.  I'm open to new ideas, though, so I don't mind hearing from anyone who disagrees with me.  Here's the first one...

Thumbs up: Asheville, NC, band Dehlia Low.  These folks are making some beautiful, gritty mountain music.  Simple but powerful melodies, excellent musicianship that doesn't seem like they're just showing off, lyrics that take you someplace.  Not to take away from anyone in the band...but singer/fiddler Anya Hinkle's voice is just genuine mountain soul.  The only problem with them is they have no banjo...but that can be fixed.

Thumbs down: Randy Kohrs and company.  Compared to Dehlia Low, this band is way too "slick"--aimless instrumentals, overused lyrics, too much hair polish...nothing new here.  These guys are all about everything that's wrong with country music today.
