Is There No $200 Banjo?

Posted by blamethebanjo on Monday, January 8, 2007

You can find a guitar for that price that can be played but a cheap banjo is junk for the most part.I have had some pawn shop duds through the years.I have had some in the $500 range that weren't much better.Fender, Hondo for two.

Hi, Darrell.... Nope, not unless you are very lucky. Beginner's banjos in the early 60's cost $1-200- when a dollar bought lot more- and were quite cheap and funky at that price. Nothing has improved greatly at that price level ever since, but once in a while a good used banjo pops up cheap. regards, Stanger

Sounds like you and me are travelling in the same footsteps, cause I had a Hondo banjo before I got my Fender FB-58.  The Hondo I had was retailed for $233.33 and was a piece o' crap. It came without a tone ring and a cheap aluminum pot.  I soon busted the head on it with my inexperienced head-tightening technique (well no technique at all).  All and all, these experiences are what you look back at and what you build upon in your career.
