The Same Old Moon

Posted by blamethebanjo on Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Last night as I have often done I stood outside looking up at the moon in wonder. I started reflecting on my feelings with my wife about my amazment  in knowing that dear old moon has looked back down at all of us.

That is what really stirs up feelings in me.The fact that everyone who has ever lived has done so under that same old moon. Of course the same can be said of the sun, mountains and  the seas and so on. The moon however plays a much different role I think. There is a romantic and mysterious feeling that comes from gazing up at it.

Time seems to have had little effect on the moon. Unlike the many generations of us who have come and gone, it remains. I think about Abraham Lincoln and so many others from the past and realizing this is the same exact scene they saw before me. Somehow it brings me to a place in time that is closer to those from long ago. A kinship  knowing that all of us walk the same Earth and although there are small differences we are so much alike.

I am so thankful to have been born on this beautiful planet with all there is to see, hear and feel. There just might be life on some distant planet but I doubt it could match what we have here. This big family who occupy these grounds surely are all our brothers and sisters. It makes me think that a person can't really own land. They can have papers saying they do but it is only paper.

That old saying "You can't take it with you." comes to mind.  How true that is. After all does the moon belong to anyone? It belongs to all of us equally. Ours to enjoy, ownership doesn't apply. Maybe the best things in life are free afterall.

Darrell, just finished a gig, took some time out in the garden only tonight when i got in, for a coffee and a smoke, looked up at the sky and the moon, its quite humbling, like an instant injection of complete calm.

I've had the same thoughts many times. I've also seen the moon light up the Colorado mountains like daytime. I've seen it bouncing off the waves in the ocean while in the navy. I've seen it coming up over a hill in the Arizona desert while running, so big it literally made me stop to get a grasp that it was just the moon. I used to look at it from my bedroom window in Mississippi when I was a kid. It's still there, still familiar, but as you mention, mysterious, the same moon joemac sees in England. Nice thoughts Darrell.

Darrell, do you know the poem `Silver` by Walter De La Mare?. We learnt it in school and every time I look at the moon I think of it. You`re right. We can`t own the land but its our duty look after it for those that come after us.

Hey Darrell, The Only thing that's more Beautiful than a Moonlit Night is , A Sunrise over the Mountains, Seeshore , or Even as I look out or My Deer Stand and see the Cardinals Glistening in the   Morning Sun, and those are the Times when I Know That GOD is Really Real, He Created all those things Just for us to Enjoy, and I think at those times I'm closer too Him !  Love Ya Man !
