growing up banjo

Posted by Timeliner on Thursday, April 17, 2008

.so back in 1968, at age 11 I go down to the music store at Memorial City Mall in Houston and make my first credit purchase. A Banjo. It cost $175.
A nice Alvarez as I remember. I only had $30 in bills and coins but they took it and let me sign my name to a contract and just walk out of the store with it ( I should say strut !)
Good times....... Try doing that at 11 these days ! :-)~
I walked a mile to my house with that heavy thing and almost died from the heat.  a few weeks later I walked back to that  store and bought a hard shell case they found that would fit my Banjo.
I went by to that place every week to pay some money off on my Banjo.
I had to cut a lot of lawns to make money back then to earn cash to pay for it and I only got about $2 to cut a lawn. I had to pay for the lawn mower too. I was in dept up to my ears on that mower.  I worked a deal sorta like with the Banjo to buy it.
I got 50 cents a week for an allowance too and that was always spent before I got it.  I learned a bunch about money and how hard it is to make, to keep , and use right.
Somebody stole my Banjo back in 1991 so I bought a new Gibson RB-250..... cash
Wow...Now I was living large  :-)
I've done many things since then and my life has changed direction often.
Time has come and gone.
I still play the Banjo and dream big about where it will take me and who I'll meet along the way.

It's never done me wrong
