I sit here listening to the old song, that was one of my Mother's favorites, "I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes." My Mother is still with us but sadly age has taken it's toll on her in so many ways.God bless her heart, she was as good a Mother as you could want through the years. Not quite perfect but none of us are.
More than anyone she instilled in me a deep love for music. The music of her and Dad's time became my music too.Bill Monroe,Hank Williams Sr., the Carter Family and many others that a young kid might not have been exposed to in the nineteen sixties. The stories she would tell about the music.Where she first heard it and the memories it brought back. You see my Mom played the guitar really well and had a voice that could have taken her out of the poverty of her Kentucky home had she gone that direction.
Her singing and playing was a delight to any who heard her.She sang in the little church but mostly I remember sometime during the day she would sit on her bed and sing and play.I can still hear the old gospel tunes and her heartfelt interpretations of them.Angelic comes to mind.Mom was extremely bashful and humble when ask to sing.Always after much promting she would pick up her old Harmony accoustic guitar and bless all in range of her soulful songs.
Sometimes I think about all the great talent that has gone unnoticed and still does. All the same it is out there.Always has been.Always will be.My Mom's cousin is Dottie Rambo of Gospel Music fame. They once stayed in touch many years ago.It must run in the family because Mom could have been a recording star on her own early on.Instead she chose to be our star and guiding light.I will always be thankful that she kept her audience small.Just us,her family and friends.Lots of folks missed out by not hearing her but we were lucky in so many ways.
Recently I sat at her bedside and she said she was ready to go home to be with Jesus.I ask her tp pick out a mansion with room next door for me.I expect there to be a crowd gathered around her listening to those old songs.I can't wait to sit in someday.

What a great sentiment. Beautiful, Darrell. My mother also gave me the gift of music. She was organist in the Methodist Church in Early, IA (farm town of 400) for almost 55 years. My dad used to joke, no one in the county could get married or buried without first checking her schedule. She's to be 91 this year, but Alzheimer's has taken it's dreadful toll. She can't remember names, events or anything else of her life. But if I start a tune on the banjo, within a few bars she's humming along... and smiling. Music and love are the last to go. And I'll bet they're the first two things pulled out someday in the mansion. Isn't that great news? Craig

Many of us are in the same boat. I recently learned a Jimmy Rodgers tune that we've had fun singing and jamming called "Mother, Queen of my Heart." You can check out the tune at:

My wife and I lost both our mothers about a year ago. The music helps us get through. There are some nice thoughts posted here. God bless you.

Hi DandyRandy, It is bittersweet.I cherish the memories of the past but here near the end it is sad to see my Mother bedridden and blind knowing how she loved the outdoors.Wildflowers and birds were such a joy for her to see.She lives in her memories now.
Clawfootcurt, I lost my Dad 10 years ago and it is hard I know.I am sorry for your loss and your wife's as well.Won't it be wonderful to be reunited someday?
