Its Arrived!!

Posted by SkaStan on Tuesday, April 8, 2008

6th April- Its taken nearly three months but finally after way too much hassle than was nessesary (but worth it all) my Morgan Monroe MGB 1C was deliverd to me. I tentitivly open up the packaging and pulled out the hardshell case, opening it I looked upon my banjo for the first time. I loved the look of it all shiny gold, and with a gentle stoke of the strings it sounded amazing, and in tune.  I know that looks are not important and its all down to set up and tone, but the MBC 1C is a beauty.

Now three days later I've had time to have a bit of practise. Years of guitar helped make it easy to shape chords, and to be honest wearing finger picks is not as strange as I expected. What I have noticed is that all the stuff I've been reading about in BHO now makes sence to me. I think I made a good desition buying the MGB 1C as a beginners banjo, but I am already saving for the next one - hopefully in a couple of years!!

The first thing that I've found challenging are the rolls! Bit tricky at the moment but will master these fairly soon.  Planning out my banjo journey now, hope to finish "Banjo For Dummies" within six months and move onto Earls book, just hope I can find the time to get all the practise in that I'll need.

Just remember that the notes in rolls come in an 8-pack.  1 2 3 1 2 3 1 2.  Pretty soon they'll be second nature to you.  Quality practice is as important as quantity... pay attention, focus, and go one step and a time and you'll be rolling off in no time!

As a beginner myself (playing about 10 months) I can't recommend "You Can Teach Yourself  Banjo" by Janet Davis enough!  It is an excellent framework to start with.  I've looked at lots of starter programs and I keep coming back to Janet.  www.janetdavismusic.com; check it out, you won't regret it!
