Thanks to all for a new hobby

Posted by JohnB on Saturday, April 5, 2008

There are no rules about which kind of music you play on which style of instrument. Bluegrass generally sounds best on a banjo that is set up for it. Folks who play Clawhammer style usually use an open-back with a less bright sound. For years I was playing old-time style music on a resonator bluegrass instrument. It worked, but it just didn't feel quite right - so I converted it over. Since then, I have rebuilt a few other old banjos, built an open-back kit (gold tone) and am now working on putting together another from parts that have been kicking around the basement for some years. Now, aside from playing, I have developed another hobby - resurrecting and rebuilding banjos. It is very rewarding, fun and therapeutic - and it keeps me off the streets. Without the Banjo Hangout, this would not have been possible. I just want to give a public "thank you" to all who have helped me with thoughts, advice and instructions in what has become a new passion for me. I always said that you can never have too many musical instruments. My wife thinks I may be pushing the limits...
