Gourd Banjo

Posted by tomthacker on Thursday, March 13, 2008

My neck arrived today. I'm not sure when I will get into any major work since I have so many irons in the fire already, but I will be doing some work here and there and will try to document as much as I can. what you see are, the mahogany neck blank, a "tobacco box" gourd, about 750 yards of  "Banjer strings", and the five ebony pegs.

the neck blank isn't really quite long enough and I will have to improvise on the dowel. I'm thinking there should be enough mahogany for the dowel, and some left over for a bridge or two. I have a doe skin in the freezer waiting to be tacked to the gourd, and I ordered some bone nuts from that guy on eBay. If I like the way it wounds with the banjer strings, I may put nylgut on it in the future, but that's another project. All I have left to buy is tacks and a finger board.

Now I have to get to removing everything from that block that isn't a banjo neck.

Good luck on the project.  I started making a gourd banjo a number of years ago, but somehow, it morphed into a banjo with a regular pot! Photos are on my page.  Maybe I will try for the gourd banjo again. Dave T.
