I'm going to be traveling soon and plan on taking my banjo with me.  I will fly on Air Tran and United.  Has anyone had experience taking their banjo with them as a carry on and putting it in the overhead bin?  Info from Air Tran said no problem as long as it fit into overhead bin but did not provide dimensions for overhead bin.  Hard case is 42 x 16 in.  Thanks.

Larger planes have the larger overheads. There shouldn't be any problem. I always ask to use the locker up front, (if they have one). The banjo case goes all the way to the back and doesn't interfear with anything in the locker. If not it goes in the overhead just fine. If the ticket counter says that you have to check it, you don't. Just tell them that you'll gate as last resort. I've only had to gate check once because of the small plane.
