I don't know how many folks on here are aware of the RPM project, it stands for Record per Month, and basically your write and record a whole album in February. In a temporary fit of insanity I decided this would be a good idea......and that I would play all the instruments......
It was, acually. It pushed me creatively and artistically in new and fascinating ways.
First, perfection goes out the window. You don't have the time to screw around with tracks to get them perfect, you have at most 4 or 5 takes to get maximum impact, if you make a mistake, too bad, let it go.
As to songs, I was writing in a very stream of consciousness manner, not filtering my lyrics or melodies. The result was songs and tunes that are better than anything I've written before. Deadlines do wonders for that kind of thing.
The project is done and was put in the mail Friday. I am very satisfied and a bit surprised at the quality of the sound/songs. So happy in fact that I will be doing a professional printing of the CD after I redo a few tracks with my new banjo (it was delayed till March 1 and some of the tunes were written with it in mind and I had to use a very rustic but cool hand made number) and after it is remastered.
Now for anyone that reads this blog, I'm posting one tune from the disc, "Snowmelt" an original tune with banjp, mandolin,and guitar.

Lovely tune, Steve. Nothing like a deadline to make you concentrate on the essence of a thing; I find the same thing when I have writing deadlines. Just get down to what you really want to say and SAY it. I think you can substitute "play" for "say" pretty accurately. Let us know when the CD comes out, please!
