The parts have arrived!

Posted by errantBanjo on Thursday, February 28, 2008

The parts arrived today and I eagerly tore the box open. It's amazing how small everything is when they're broken down into their individual parts!

I sat down and started reading my book on building your own banjo, and read up on the shaping (which has already been done for me) and the insertion of the truss rod. I bought the Stew Mac Hot Rod Truss Rod that was designed for their Bluegrass neck I bought. (See the pics of the neck and truss rod I have posted).

I will be reading up on installing the truss rod properly, and will do so this weekend along with laying out the fingerboard and peg head veneer to draw the outline. I will definitely be cutting the peg head veneer on my father's scroll saw due to the intricacy of the design.

I know that there are different rim configurations that would cause the heel of the neck to be cut differently, I believe the Gibson Mastertone is one such style, but can anyone tell me what the new heel on this neck will require when it comes time for me to get my pot assembled?

This is probably not very exciting to anyone else, but hey, I said I'd document the whole process so you'll all just have to live through my ramblings ;-)

Does anyone know if you can insert pics right into the blog entry rather than having to make everyone bounce back and forth from the gallery?

Thanks for the comments and interest, I'm glad people are interested in project.

My hat is off to you. I don't think I have the patience to build my own banjo. I'm almost too lazy to take of the resonator (4 screws) to tighten up the head. I guess that's pretty bad. On the other hand, if my banjo gets to sounding too bad my instructor starts making adjustments.
Keep building and picking.
Oh! That little box in upper right ha something to do with entering pictures. I think you have to upload them to your pictures on your homepage first. Other than that I'm pretty hazy about how to do it myself.

I wish I had the nerve to order a banjo kit. It has to be cool to build your own banjo. Good luck with your project!
