Schizophrenic clawgrass/bluehammer playing

Posted by roy.carpenter on Thursday, February 28, 2008

Still can't decide which style I adhere to.  I suppose I should just accept that I like playing both.  I go on these long Seeger listening phases.  The BIrds Beasts album for kids has some magnificent playing on it, as does the pioneer of folk album.  But then I'll end up in the car with only my 3 pickers album and there we go off on a Scruggsfest for a couple of weeks.  Maybe I should buy a banjo with half a resonator....

Why not just play the banjo as you like? Do this for one tune and someting else for another. Ralf Stanley did. If the banjo inspector shows up to check on your stylistic integrity tell him to nick off.

If you three-pick without finger picks it sounds old-timey, especially on a resonator-less banjo.  Try it some time, you might like what you hear.  BTW, good advice from Sy.
