Banjo Mandolins

Posted by tomthacker on Thursday, February 21, 2008

I have to wonder what the deal is with Banjo Mandolins. For the past month or more I have been trying to buy a beat up Banjo Mandolin from Ebay. I want to spend about fifty dollars or less for a repairable piece of junk.  So every time I bid on something, someone comes along and bids more. I could understand if I was bidding on something that was actually worth the price of shipping, but most of them are not. I just lost on an old beater with a torn head and a cracked neck. I watched the item for six days and waited until the last couple of hours to bid. Nobody wanted this thing until I put a bid on it. I'm not even sure why I want the thing, other than Mike Seeger holding one along with his Gibson A4 on the cover of his Mandolin instruction book. that plus I want to rehab one just for the practice. Maybe it's just not meant to be... I just wanted to rant, I'll get over it.

That's ebay for you. Your not alone, it happens to me all the time.

I've seen things sell for much more than they cost new. don't know what people do with them. Some people just have to win, it's a sickness like my banjo collection. I know I can only play one at a time, but what the heck.

I feel your pain. Happens to me quite often on Ebay. People will pay more for junk than it was ever worth brand new. It's disappointing to the buyer, but I guess the seller is laughing all the way to the bank.

Ah, you'll win one eventually. I've won four mandolin banjos on eBay; some required a good bit of work, which was fun. Two were Fairbanks-Vega Style K; one was an Oliver Ditson, probably built by Vega; the other is a '22 Fairbanks-Vega Style S which has been converted to a short-scale 5-string. All of these have turned out to be very good, playable instruments.

Thanks, now I don't feel so all alone. I'm sure eventually I'll find what I'm looking for.
