SAGA Banjo kit... lessons learned

Posted by tomthacker on Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Last weekend I glued the abalone stars to the fretboard and the peghead. Yesterday evening I decided to take them of since I had scribed the lines for routing. The small star on the fifth fret marker came off just fine, the larger star on the peghead broke into a few pieces. Apparently, you shouldn't leave them on for very long when marking the  lines, the glue got to hard. I had already ordered new strings and the remaining planetary tuners, now I get to order another star. I wish I had logged how much I have spent on shipping charges, but I knew from the start that building from a kit, or even from scratch, is a bad Idea if you are out to save money, but to be honest, I don't think I could have got THIS banjo for $250 which is about what I'll have in it when I'm done. including shipping charges.

The other good news is that my Gold-Tone MC150Kit arrived today.

I'm glad I read this. I've just brought wood to build a neck, so I will be going down this road soon. Now I won't make the same mistake.

Now I bet that Goldtone is going to be fantastic. I haven't heard a bad one yet. I brought a MC150 but had to decline from the deal as postage was over $300. I got an OB250+ and postage was $160 with it's hardcase. Read my recent blog "Banjohangout classifieds" and hear me laughing +crying, lol. Good luck with you banjos. Leon.
