SAGA Banjo kit... almost there

Posted by tomthacker on Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Today I got a box in the mail. I replaced the 5/8 compensated bridge with a 1/2 inch straight  bridge. The action is a tad lower, and while I was tuning and trying to set the bridge, rather than fret the 12th fret I decided to try chiming it. When I got the chime right, my intonation problem disappeared. Some of the sound I was hearing I'm convinced was the difference between my old banjo and the new, and there is still an occasional slight buzz on the third string. One of the future projects  I have in mind is installing a bone nut, but right now I'm short the tools, the bone, and the know how, plus I have a million other irons in the fire, at least now I can play it.  Another thing that was in the box was a big  (5/8") abalone star for the headstock, I already have a smaller one for the 5th fret, I'm hoping to get to that this weekend. Then I will be calling it done (for now...).
