Well we just got the word that our band the Moriah Go-Getters didn't make the cut for the '08 Battle of the Jug Bands. We did get chosen as the third alternate, which means that if three of the bands chosen drop out, then we'll play. I don't know what the drop-out rate is for previous contests, but I doubt as many as three bands will drop out.
As Band-Leader David Hanners said, "We could, of course, track down the members of one of the bands that was chosen, kidnap them, keep them bound and gagged in Bob's basement and then appear at the competition under their name. That plan, however, involves some legal issues which I'm not particularly willing to take on should something go awry. So, in short, we're screwed."
We played last year and had a blast - it'll be sad to not be in the race for the coveted Waffle Iron this year, but what the hey, we'll do it again sometime I'm sure.
In the meantime, (to ease the pain) I should point out that I play in a group of musicians known as the Rhythm Pups. We play folk, we play old timey, we play acoustic rock, we play R&B and even a little Carribean material, too! All this in a band whose instrumentation consists of Guitars, Mandolins, Electric Dulcimer, Banjo, Harmonica, Bass, Slide Guitar, Percussion and Fiddle. Mix in some vocal harmonies and you have The Rhythm Pups.
This Sunday night (January 20th) from 6PM until 9PM the Pups are going to be rockin' the Shamrock Bar on Seventh street in St. Paul. We love our fans and would be really excited if all you folks could make your way down to the Shamrock this Friday night. We usually get a good turn-out for our shows at the Shamrock and we hope you all will join us for what will be our first show of 2008.
Besides the usual gang of suspects (Bret Byfield, Tim Rumsey, Steve Moon, Al Fryc and Don Fitzwater) we'll be joined this evening by Tim's brother, Dan Rumsey, on Guitar, Harmonica, Fiddle, Percussion and maybe some Mandolin, too!. The Pups always have a great time at our shows and lots and lots of great music can be heard so come on down and join us this Sunday at the Shamrock.
The Rhythm Pups - proof once again of what happens when you let a bunch of musicians get together without adult supervision!
