I got a box from StewMac today, some strings, and a tailpiece for one of my tenors. So I put the tenor together restrung and played around and then I went to restring my SAGA kit, which I thought would at least make it playable. So far I've had to modify the tailpiece and order some bracket hooks that were missing from the kit. Then while I was stringing it I broke one of the strings from not paying attention. But at least all of the tuners worked. I read a few posts where one of the tuners would have to be replaced. I was happy for my small victory, but when the strings came in and i put them on, paying close attention this time, the third string tuner would not advance, even though it did before. I'm beginning to think that I will have paid StewMac as much as I paid for the kit before it's done. I was able to play the first phrase of cripple creek or at least up to the point where I needed the third string, and it sounds nice.
BTW does anyone know where I can get those plastic fretboard dots? Missing one.

I've thought about making a banjo myself, either from a kit or to try buying the parts individually. I do a little woodworking but I'm not sure I could make all the wooden parts from scratch. This blog entry has added a little more inspiration.

Hey Tom,
Stick with it. Having been through all of this is a great education about how banjos work, something I've never had the patience to endure. If I did, I'm sure I'd know more about being able to do my own set-up.
