Maggie and I made the long rainy drive down the 401 to Toronto last Monday to Hugh's Room for Jackie Washington's 88th birthday celebration.
Jackie has been one of my musical heros since I first saw him circa 1964 at Hamilton's Black Swan Coffee House. I had just bought a guitar and learned all three chords and was quite proud of myself. After seeing Jackie, who was over 20 years younger than I am now, I bought Mickey Baker's Jazz Guitar book and tried to play just like Jackie. I even looked around for a flat top Kay guitar just like he played, even though my 1958 Goya M-26 was probably a much nicer guitar.
The celebration at Hugh's Room included a bunch of Jack's friends: Ken and Chris Whiteley, Ben Whiteley, Brent and Liam Titcomb, Nancy White, Willie P. Bennett and others. They all told Jackie stories and sang songs that had to do with Jackie or reminded them of Jackie. There was even a reunion of the Original Sloth Band. When Maggie and I first met, the first record I ever loaned her was a Sloth Band Record.
Many thanks to Ken Whiteley for organizing this wonderful evening.
