Hi folks,
I'm new but I'm also an old person just starting to learn. I tried to teach myself bluegrass banjo 10-15 years ago but that didn't turn out so well.
I've decided this time to go for CH. Would it be better to start on a four or five string Bango? I'm going to get both a resonator and an open back banjo. I'm also going to invest in lessons! My girlfriend is taking guitar lesson and we are hoping to find an instructor to teach both of us in the Newberry-Trenton, Florida area to come to our home and teach us.
We are both severely disabled veterans and it would work much better if the instructor could come to us.
Thanks for your help!
Jami

May I suggest that you put your question(s) on a forum. Forums get more reads than blogs.
Also, we have a teacher's list. Go here and follow easy instructions:banjohangout.org/teachers/
Forums are located on the left hand side of the page. Under forums, click browse forums, scroll to appropriate forum (clawhammer), click on that one and then in upper left hand side, click on post new topic. Give your topic a subject and ask your questions then click on either subscribe to comments or on post comment. Then check back for replies.
Welcome to the Hangout. Hope you find the teacher you need.

There are quite a few clawhammer teachers and players in Florida, and I feel sure that there will be someone or some program that will provide instruction and support for veterans. As Texasbanjo suggests, post your message in the Playing Advice: Clawhammer and Old-time Styles to reach a larger and focused audience. I have taught clawhammer at the Louisville Folk School and at Kentucky Music Week and may be able to help you online. A five-string open back banjo is all you need to get started. Once you get started, you will be able to refine your music choices and select another banjo, if necessary.
