Scammers

Scammers impersonating    Banjo Hangout Members.
Over the last several months I've had 3 supposed members inquiring on a banjo I've had for sale on the Hangout as well as a shout out in trying to obtain a set of old nationals..They emailed me through the hangout link and without thinking,  I started a conversation and even lost a small amount of money attempting to purchase a set of those old nationals. Anyway, it would be a real smart idea to have a list of "Genuine members" that we can all access in making sure those people scamming, are weeded out immediately.  Only then, we can ascertain that we are communicating with ONLY registered members of this platform.  Thanks, Banjovision

We try our best to weed out the scammer before they get to the members, however, with scammers hacking into old, unused accounts, it's almost impossible to find them until they post a classified. Those scammers who join are vetted as to IP and any information given and that's all we can do.

You can always check out any member by going to his or her home page. That will tell you when they joined and if it's a brand new member, then some caution should be taken before doing business with them. You can also check my sticky on the Swap Shop to see if that member has been locked out for spamming and you can also report any suspicious activity to the moderators.

Other than that, I know of no foolproof way to stop scammers from joining and attempting to make bogus sales to members.

Thanks ... These days with all the sophisticated technology, I can understand your point. I think checking the homepage may be the best bet at this point. I've also started asking these folks prior to my engagement, how long they've been playing, what banjos are they currently playing, do they have and UTube or face book presence etc...that seems to be working well. Most often scammers don't know much about banjos and most often have the weirdest come back from basic questions. A red flag right there.
