The Earl Scruggs book has a great chapter. Also...on e by Roger Siminoff...I can't recall the name. Lots of other resources. Good luck and have fun.

For your first banjo, you might consider purchasing one of the kits available for order on the web. The cost is pretty low compared to the product you will end up with. It really helps to have someone who is really good with woodworking and one that is familiar with banjo setup.
The forums are a great resource as you encounter questions and problems along the way.
Good luck to you - I wish I had started banjo when I was your age.
