The strings ends can hit or rub the inside of a case and eventually tear it. Anyone have this problem? Any one ever put a towel or a cover (like a golf club cover) over their peghead to protect the case from the possibility of tear from the string end?

I never heard of that, but don't see why it wouldn't work if that's what you want to do. I'd choose something soft and not abrasive in anyway, like a fleece or soft cotton.
I have a '92 Stelling and still have it's original case and I've never had a problem but I trim the strings where they don't stick up and that's also a solution you might want to look at.
