Rating yourself as a player

Posted by Judith511 on Saturday, February 22, 2020

like this

So I was going through my profile and changed the picture. The picture is a Gold Tone Tenor banjo.  It wasn't a super expensive one but expensive enough for me.   Then I looked at the rating scores and thought I don't feel like a novice any more so I think I have to rate myself as an intermediate player. Don't get  me wrong I don't feel like I know it all or could even hope to but I think I have moved out of the novice beginner category.  My banjos don't sit under the bed like I am sure many do. They get played regularly. I try and learn something new every day. I also play guitar but. not as much as the banjo.  So although I am on the bottom end of the intermediate scale I am having fun and moving on with my playing. :)

Sometimes progress is so slow it seems like standing still, then one day you notice the scenery has changed and you're not where you used to be.

Rating yourself is tough especially if your very self critical. When I first joined. BHO, I rated myself as Just Starting. After a number of years, and a little less self criticism, I changed my rating to Novice. Later, I changed to unrated. After examining and changing my goals, I'm back to Novice. I think you just have to decide, how self critical you want to be, what your goals are, and if your meeting your goals. Keep picking.

After shattering my wrist in January with a boatload of physical therapy ahead of me the only thing I'm playing is my tendons and ligaments... but I'm also polishing up my banjo rolls in G (since even tuning is a chore

Oh no that sounds nasty geoB pickn5 it is hard. I think it to depends on what your goals are. I am not planning on being a professional any time soon. I only play for myself for fun. I like the accomplishment of learning new things.

Record your work.
Playbacks can be very humbling.

I still feel very much a beginner, though I imagine to someone a couple of weeks in I must by now seem reasonably proficient. So in some ways I could be called an intermediate. I can play all my tunes I have learned in reasonably good time at jam speed (looking intermediate now), but I am tab reliant, my ear skills are very poor and I cannot jam 'on the fly' so end up sitting out often.(looking beginner now).

AndyW So today I got a test from Brainjo to test where you are at. It put me at beginner/intermediate. I think that is reasonable. I am improving but I have only been playing 4 years and I think it takes much longer than that to become intermediate moving into advanced. That said I am happy with where I am I am much further ahead than I was 4 years ago. :D
