In January as I struggled to learn all the 'Clawhammer Banjo From Scratch' tunes I re-arranged the B part of Mississippi Sawyer as I didn't particularly get along with Dan Levensons version. My creation ended up crooked with an extra beat and probably drifted away from the actual tune a wee bit. The rearrange for me then was timewise a torturous process(though enjoyable).
Spring forward 9 months and again I am rearranging it to come up with a straight version to play along with the 'old time jam machine'. This time I am glad to say it took only about 20 minutes.
Then, an hours practice to bring it from an initial speed of 90bpm to otj speed of around 125bpm and playalongability.
I'm not sure exactly why I was so much quicker rearranging this time. Possibly it's due to my basic playing speed being so much faster. I think that has also 'speeded up my ear' making me recognise good/bad at normal playing speeds whereas before when my playing was extremely slow my ear misread stuff a wee bit. Just a theory.
Suffice to say I'm pleased how smoothly this went.
