Over the last couple weeks a few really awesome things have happen in my banjo world.
First off, i finally attempted to start to learn a song by ear. My teacher pushed me in this direction and it has been incredible. It essentially feels like a puzzle. It is not easy and when the 10 seconds or few measures i was able to piece together weren't as far along in the song as i thought they were, it was a bit discouraging. But wow heading to my lesson tonight to show my teacher what i had done was so exciting. I even got some of the song right!!! Either way , the melody was there, even if the notes weren't spot on. I just want to share how great this is for my leaning. In my last entry i talked about how my practice turned into me just playing, this was absolutely largely in part due to playing by ear.
I also want to point out how much my listening to music has changed with this practice and throughout my banjo playing over all. Even just from the past two weeks sometimes i will be listening to some old time music and be like , "hey, i know what that is!". How cool!
Also, i joined Banjo Quest created by Tom Collins on Patreon. This site is super cool and just more community for me to tap into!
It's odd sometimes how much whatever I am going through with my instrument matches up to my actual life. I have been going through somewhat of a transitional phase in my life and am focused a lot on building community. I find myself seeking this out with regard to banjo as well. I really am starting to see how many other forms of practice there is! Such as listening to music, meeting new people, seeking out jams, coming on here. All of it, its all part of the process.
Thanks for providing me this space!
