It's back to college this week......after 25 years

Posted by wkb28791 on Sunday, August 26, 2007

Well, my shots are up to date and all my paperwork is in order. My books have been purchased and my class schedule is in place.

I start back to college after raising my family. A bit late...I know. Even worse is that I am somewhat of an oddity as I will more than likely be the oldest student there by a long shot. You should see the looks I get when Folks find out that I am the student rather than one of my kids. In some strange way I do feel like I am intruding on some kids college experience. I can imagine how they must feel. The last thing they want hangin around campus is an old man.

Still, I intend to carry through with this. I am going back to finish my BA in mathematics and get my teaching license. 2 years worth of work. I have to admit that I am a bit intimidated.  MY kids are grown, I just put my wife through college and now I need to find a new career. I've done manual work all of my life and the old body just can't continue doing what I'm doing. I have been involved with Electricity/Electronics in one form or another for thirty years.

I hope the good lord walks with me on this one.

Best of luck, Ken.  You have a lot of courage and commitment, and that's to be commended.  Now, get to bed, it's a school night!

Have a great semester, Ken.  You will not be intruding on anyone's experience.  As a 16-year veteran of college teaching, I can tell you that folks with life experiences like yours make the best students--and they enrich the experiences of the young people who sit in class with you.  While you may not end up being part of the "college kid" scene, you will be a very important part of the college experience.  Soak it up.  Folks like you are the reason I keep going to work every day.  And it's normal to be intimidated.  I predict that you will have a blast.

very cool story and congratulations for having the courage to do it...I echo Stev's comment and remember having a few "seasoned/aged" students around when I was in school...and how much we all benefited from them...
