Having fun with the Strum Machine...doing Blackberry Blossom and Banjo in the Hollow. :)  I signed up today for a Music Course on is called Fundamentals of Music Theory. It is free....I have done a bunch of online courses mostly about animals and animal care but they are fun. I never had much music education, barely know how to read notes. :)

I have taken a couple of music courses through Coursera. The Edinburgh University was interesting an helpful though the final was too difficult. Two courses with Berklee were better, in my view. I plan to take more courses later this year.

Yes they can be difficult and some of the courses are very information intensive. I have a done a few that took at least hour a day through the week to complete. That is watching the lectures and reading course material. It has been awhile since I found something that was offered that I wanted to take. The music one just started January 2nd. I have looked for it before but it was not being offered at that time.

It really is amazing how much online education exists. I'm now re-learning German (two years in high school fifty five years ago) with Duolingo, for a trip to Europe hopefully this summer. I learned music theory from my dad back when I took guitar lessons from him. I still remember the basics. There are a number of really good books - I go back to them when I need to refresh some area. There's a lot to remember.

Judith511 you are doing a smart thing, getting this under your belt early on.

For those not yet enrolled, here is another source of quality education, I believe at no cost:

I have taken on line courses such as these, and the quality is generally good. Of course you get out of it what you put in. If all you do is rotely follow the course, take the required tests, and finish it up you will not learn. You need to put in the extra effort to read, take notes, and actually learn the material. With edx I believe you can take the course for free if you don't want credit for it. For credit there is a small fee.
