I have just discovered a new world. The world of Band-in-a-box. What an unbelievable practice tool that has redefined my banjo playing experience. I have now gone from playing riffs and leads to making music.
Hearing chord changes, joining in mid song, creating new sounds on the run, and improving my timing dramatically.
BIAB should be compulsory. Like driver training for 16 year olds before they are let loose in a car, all BJ players should be made to practice with BIAB before being let loose at group jam sessions. Then they should be issued with a banjo license, which has photo ID, and can be withdrawn after repeated incidences of bad public playing or trying to take over jam sessions.
