Just a quick update to let you know we took new features live today which allow you to tag members in your forum posts.
How do I tag others?
Tagging can be done two ways:
What does tagging do?
Tagging alerts the member of your post, and makes that member's username a link in your post. Basically, tagging is used to make sure a member knows about your post.
Right now, any time you tag a member they will immediately receive an email notification. In the future we will enhance these alerts so members can choose to only see tag alerts on the website, receive a daily digest, etc.
A few other things...
The preview button when composing a quick reply is now working again. We also fixed the rich text editor so shortcut keys like Ctrl+B work again. And we resolved a problem which was causing some of the rich text popup windows were opening behind the lefthand navigation bar.
Enjoy!

Way to go schlange ! That will make it so much easier to continue conversations with other members, and also include someone else that knows a lot about the topic, if they want to contribute. I have used this feature a lot with other forums, it makes communication much easier and saves a lot of time.
Thanks for this!
Cheers,
Boadicea

Any updates on when access to the various groups that I was part of before the upgrade will again be available?

Really @schlange I think tagging is rude and obtrusive without the express permission of the person being tagged

The very last thing I want @schlange is to start getting emails from people I dont know so that I can rush over and see what they had to say @schlange

I think @schlange that this might be ok if people had an opportunity to permanently opt out of being tagged. or better still let them be opted out by default and maybe give them the option to opt in to being tagged.

BHO used to have a feature where you could go to someone's homepage @schlange and from there send them a message. I think that is sufficient if the feature is still there and I cant think of any good reason why you should make it easy for someone to spam my inbox. I just say no to this.

I share Snowbird's concerns. I certainly don't want my e-mail address blasting out to the universe and eventually to avaricious, agressive advertisers of various ilks. Or is the e-mail cloaked? If it isn't cloaked, please don't install this program until there is an opt-out option. Or said another way, please do not Equifax us/me! banjered

banjered : the system sends you an email notification.... nobody sees your email address in order for this to happen.
Snowbird: we may eventually let people opt out of being tagged, but I really don't think it's going to be a big problem. Generally folks like to know when others are talking to/about them... this is that mechanism. Simple as that.

I still don't want to be tagged. My e-mail is too overloaded already without BHO adding in. I hope you put in the opt-out-tagging A.S.A.P.! Please! It is annoying enough I will consider dropping out of BHO, at least as far adding commentary. banjered

Thanks Eric, Btw, I think this is a good feature and much easier than the old way of notifying someone to look at a post or a thread.

I understand people's reluctance to add more to their daily email overload, but I like the option of being tagged and/or subscribing. That way, you don't necessarily have to have the whole thread coming at your email, but only when someone addresses you specifically, you will be notified. I can't see an avalanche coming. It is easy enough to reference a member without tagging them, besides (generating no email at all), unless you would like a specific response from them.

No tagging should be the default. If someone thinks it is a good feature for them, then have them opt in. Shouldn't be a problem to opt in -- they decide for themselves.
If someone else thinks tagging is a good feature for me, so what? Ask me first. That's why the default should be no tagging.
