My Brother's Gallantry

Posted by brokenstrings on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

When we were really little, I hit him with a hockey puck and he retaliated by making me knock out part of a tooth with a toy pistol. But we stood up for each other.

Fast-forward a few years.

When we moved to Long Island in my last year of high school, and from the third-worst high school in New Jersey (or was it just in Monmouth County?) to a much fancier school, I was overwhelmed and struggling to keep up. (Why did it matter? You don't know my father!) So I tried to drop Chemistry, but my adviser didn't want me to because I was doing well in it.

Matt came home and found me in tears and asked why.

Two days later, someone comes into the Chemistry lab and tells me I've had the course dropped and should now proceed to study hall.

Later I learn that my big brother (he's younger than I am but nearly a foot taller; he often introduces me as "Little Sister") marched into my adviser's office and barked, "What's this about not letting my sister out of Chemistry?" and she hastily gave in.

My big brother is coming up from Florida on Saturday.  I only get to see him once or twice a year so it's always a special time.  Childhood fights are long forgotten but the protective big brother role remains.  He still thinks he knows what's best for me!!!
