What has been your most helpful music revelation this year? Mine has been the application of scales while fingering chord forms. As I have practiced becoming more familiar with the the scale in each major chord form, it has helped me pick up and play melodies on the banjo without being tied to tab and rote memorization. I plan on demonstrating this on video this weekend.
The reason I began videoing and writing what I'm doing is to hopefully help with the learning process. What I have to say is not earth breaking for a musician, but it is for someone like me who plays music as a hobby and is juggling many other balls outside of the music profession.
Anyway, good luck and good practicing in 2017.
Also, I"ve been talking to Mr. Helix lately about building a new banjo for me. I've been playing the Jackrabbit he made for me since 2009. Man, time moves by quickly. I have decided to upgrade my sound or rather change my sound. Looking forward to seeing how this works out.

Well, this may sound funny. I've discovered that I really don't know the lyrics to songs - even some I thought I knew all my life. Singing a line and then "something, something, something" pretty much kills joy and runs me off the rails. So one of my goals is really pretty simple - learn the lyrics. Gotta know 'em to sing 'em. Best wishes to you in the New Year.

Me to. I have spent so much time learning technique, that I really don't have a whole song memorized. I usually use the lyrics displayed on my ipad with the chords if I want to try and sing a song all the way through. I think I"ll try to implement your goal also. There all ways too much to try to learn...
