As a banjo picker, sometimes we have to find ways of making ourselves sound more "musical", at least to sensitive civilian ears :-)
For me, the solution has always been to try and find things to play along with, so it's not just a naked banjo twanging away, but is softened a bit by guitars and mandolins. Of course the best way to do this is by, duh, jamming! But what about when you just cant find other pickers at the moment when you really gotta pick?
This is where I discovered multi-track recording, and it has revolutionized my practicing. In fact, when I jam along with backing tracks, it is so fun I have a hard time even calling it "practice", cuz it feels more like I'm just rocking out :-)
Check out my jam to Blackberry Blossom HERE, where I am playing along to a backing track I had recorded earlier. If you like it, I highly recommenced that you try pickin along to some of backing tacks I have ready at JamAlong.org. I promise you'll have a blast!

I use BIAB and play along with it. Yes, it is sort of like having your own jam buddies right there with you. I use it for learning new songs, new breaks, backup, etc. Great way to pick by yourself and feel you're learning and doing something.

Oh, I'm sorry, when you were talking about backing tracks, that's what I thought you were talking about. Yes, as said above, it means Band in a Box. Great software. You can input chords to any song and play it at any speed and in any key and it's easy to change speed or key. You can loop songs to play as many times as you want. It'll do a lot more than that, but that's basically what I use it for.
