Now we don't many blossoms in our yard, but once in a while we are surprised by the profusion of blooms on one of our cactii.
This week it was the tall columnar cereus in the front yard. Over two nights it produced over 100 blooms! It has never had more than three blossoms at a time. The blooms open up at sunset and close in the early morning when the light hits them. The blooms don't have much of a fragrance, but there were a variety of insects gathering pollen and nectar.
The bad part about it is that when the blooms fade and wilt, they turn an ugly black. So now we have a large columnar cactus with over 100 slimy black "tassels" hanging from it!
Oh well, it was worth it.
You can view this cactus in my desert flowers album.
