My new Deering Parlor Banjo arrived

So my Deering Parlor banjo arrived yesterday. Normally the first thing I do when I get my hands on a new banjo is to put a set of nylguts on it before I play it for the first time. Even though I had purchased a new tailpiece (cammed no knot) and a new bridge (Morris) and was planning to put red nylguts on it for some reason I decided to play it for a bit as it was when it arrived.

After playing it with steel strings for two days now I am literally amazed at just how little pressure is required to produce a clean note and just how far off into “oy vey that sounds awful” land a note can go when fretted with a bit too much gusto.

While I am still debating on whether I should stay with the steel strings or go with the Red Nylguts I really like this banjo. I purchased it because there are days with the stretch to the first position on my standard scale banjos is quite uncomfortable and on those days and others my shoulder often likes to remind me that there is a price to be paid for racing though a submarine "Tarzan style" way too many times.

With its light weight and short scale the Deering Parlor Banjo makes it possible for me to play and play...

Did I mention that this banjo is cute? I'm not sure what "cute" has to do with the price of Deep Fried Coke in Hell, Michigan however when I look at my Deering Parlor banjo I smile. When I pick it up I grin. When I play it I start laughing.

I really like my Deering Parlor banjo.

Life is good.

Well, I'm not sure what a Parlor Banjo is, but I'm glad you like it. Is it a smaller banjo? I have a Gold Tone mini Cripple Creek (travel) banjo that I like a lot. Anyway, I hope you enjoy yours. Merry Christmas, Dick

Yes, it is a smaller banjo. A bit bigger than your mini though. I am indeed enjoying it. Thank you. And happy holidays to you, yours and everybody that reads this.
