...are complete 100% Grade A BULLS**T. Do I play the banjo? Yes. Do I want to play bluegrass, old-time, or any other normally banjo related genres all the time? NO. And I don't have to. Nor does any other artist. If Alison Krauss wants to do a project with Robert Plant, she shouldn't get stoned to death for not being bluegrass anymore. David Allen Coe said it best (and i'm paraphrasing here...): "Someone tried to tell me one time I was a country artist. I said 'F**k you, I'll play an damn thing I want to, any damn time.' And if any one's got a problem with it, I'll kick their ass." Confinement is the end of artistry. Like music, not genres. Peace.

Amen, Derek.  Music is alive, and like any other living thing it evolves, mutates, flourishes, languishes, picks up parasites.  Music is opportunist--it finds any corner of the world to take root, any instrument, any beating heart to grow in.  There is no wrong way.

Personally, I think the Kraus/Plant collaboration idea is genius, and I can't wait to hear it.

the reason music has genres is because people like their music at an individual level.  I despise rap, tolerate country, love bluegrass, and tolerate old time.  My choice, my expression, my art...not for you to judge.  Not all music is pleasant to all ears.

PS:  You are young, enjoy your idealism and my post was not written to admonish you for your take on the world, just to let you peer into my little perspective of it.

Right on, Derek. I've found musicians, especially good ones, aren't the folks who want everything put into nice tidy categories- it's much more the listeners who don't play. But they sure have lots of comments and opinions about what they think you should play, and how to play it, too. It happens at festivals all the time.

just so you all know, if you state your opinion, i'll respect it. and i repsect the idea of genres, but not enough to keep my mouth shut. and really, its not "genres" that bother me, but when people start telling you what you are, or expect you to be one thing or the other, the latter, i think, being the case with the Krauss/Plant project.
