I picked up a very cheap new 6 string Banjo/Guitar that I found on 'Gumtree' - since I have rather broad fingers, I thought I'd see if it would serve as a Wide Neck Bluegrass Banjo and modified the Nut by cutting a couple of extra grooves in it after altering the position of the 2cnd and 3rd strings.
I fitted a 5 string Banjo Bridge - With the 5th string, I left it in the 6th string groove at the nut and placed a 'miniature railroad spike' behind the 5th fret to give it the correct tuning.
The spacing between strings 1 and 4 is now 1-1/8 inches (my RK36 is 1 inch) - and it works well for anyone who may have trouble with Banjo String spacing, its an easy alternative ....cheers

Interesting. What we used to call a "kludge." How's it sound?

It has an all wood pot and tone ring, so it sounds very ordinary (boxy ) with the resonator, better without the resonator ...but it plays well ... handy to practice with as it is not too loud , but the idea has potential - I paid $65 and it was new, so it was an interresting experiment .....cheers
