Wow 3 months already where has this time gone.... well mostly playing the banjo, I'm fortunate that i can find this amount of time to practice which is about 3-4 hrs most evenings and quite a bit at weekends.
Have now had three 1 hr lessons with a local tutor and really being pushed forward with the amount of work being set fingers are almost numb now with string grooves in the left hand being a permanent fixture now. It is really good to have someone there to push you that little bit more, a quick breakdown of the lessons so far
Lesson 1 - Playing cripple creek with someone else, quite a feat in itself and backing to guitar and given Salt Creek arrangement by Mike Stahlman
Lesson 2 - Practice of previous weeks work, given an alternative slightly more complexed version of Salt Creek, worked with a melodic tune of Devils Dream, intro of the G lick with Wildwood Flower and the use of G, C & D chords for vamping with Cripple Creek
Lesson 3 - Practice, Practice & and more Practice trying to nail down the chord shapes and the alternative Salt Creek version, and given the Ballad of Jed Clampett, relatively easy tune but with a complex change change from Am to D, doesn't seem to be any easy way for it at the minute so just need to keep practicing.
During the last couple of weeks I out grew my entry level Stagg Banjo and did pick up a couple of banjos from Ebay at a very reasonable price, why 2? I've no idea got carried away with two of them and couldn't make up my mind... I still cant make up my mind they are both very similar yet so different in tone and don't really favor one over the other at the minute but such a big step up from the Stagg
I have also been learning Foggy Mountain using the Rob Bourassa teaching videos on this site which is very well explained by Rob.....
It has been good to read some of the posts on Hang Out particularly with regards to setting up the banjo and the little tweaks with regards to the rods, head tightness, action etc etc.
I seem to have settled into a little routine now and really enjoying the journey......
Best wishes
Andy
