The banjo was brought to America from Africa by the native people in the 1700s. It evolved in the 1800s into the 5-string banjo we know and love today. Ergo, the 5-string banjo is THE original American musical instrument and to "not like it" is simply un-American. I hope none of your banjo-hating co-workers ever try to get a security clearance..... :-)

Non-musicians are a funny bunch. I heard a story on this years ago on NPR- by most accounts, the banjo and the accordion were 2 of the least liked instruments according to what people said, but after listening to sound samples before the questions, most who claimed they didn't like the banjo didn't associate it with the sound they heard.
Another interesting thing was non-players tended to claim to prefer the 'classy' instruments- the piano, violin, flute, etc. But when asked what they actually bought to listen to, none of these were common. The electric guitar rules as the stringed instrument of common listener's choice.

I can't imagine anyone in their heart of hearts not liking the banjo. There's a Jeeves and Wooster episode where the whole Drones Club takes up the banjo. My wife's family and I watched it together. They howled with laughter, and even in that comic context and a style of music that I don't play or go out of my way to listen to (minstrel songs), the high ring of 12 banjos together made me inexplicably happy.
