On January 1, 2009, I decided I would practice at least an hour every day, concentrating on timing and tone. The first 4 years I used backing tracks, and the 5th year I practiced with a metronome.
I thought that after 5 years I would be very good, and I am kind of disappointed. However, I probably did improve more than I realize.
Aside from practicing every day, I also try to jam about once a week.
So hopefully, eventually, I will be as good as I want to be.

everybody always talks a bout the "First 5 years", for me that is where it all started to happen. I'm on my seventh year and the speed is getting better. I'm 68 GC

Good to know that GC -- I just started last year and I have noticed much improvement on my playing compared to when I first picked up the banjo but it's nothing like anyone else that can jam and play with others. I hope one day to be able to post my samples like many great players on this site.
