It has been a pretty good week. On Tuesday on my show "Old Time Railroad" I had as guests the Highland Elementary Pre-School class singing a few songs (not particularl;y Old-Time but fun) and visiting the radio station. They were followed by the Highlander String Band (Gene Bowlen - banjo, Jim Gaskins- fiddle and Phyllis Gaskins - Galax style dulcimer. They played and talked for over an hour and we raised $635 for the 2 hour show.
Today was Old-Time and Bluegrass Sunday at the WVMR studio in Frost,WV and the line up was Juanita Fireball, Mudhole Control, The Young Pickers, Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, and Viney Mountain Boys. It was a good variety of Pocahontas County pickers of all ages. It was especially good to see and hear Trevor Hammons, the 14 year old (?) great grandson of Lee Hammons carrying on the family banjo tradition. I also got to jam a little with Jay Lockman of Juanita Fireball. When we left they were within a couple of hundred dollars of reaching the goal for the week of $35,000.
This is listener supported community radio and volunteering as a DJ and promoting Old-Time Music is som of the most fun I have had lately.
