I hadn't actually heard of, or heard, Foggy Mountain Breakdown before my recent entry into the world of banjo music. It soon became apparent, though, that it was some kind of Important Piece of Music, and seemingly one of the most famous banjo pieces around. Beyond a certain tune featured in Deliverance, I doubt I could have named any at all!
But anyway, so, I've made a start on learning at least the first break of that. Look at me using terms like 'break', as though I know what I'm talking about :D
For the sake of my own motivation, I recorded myself this evening, despite having a cold, a red nose, and a fair amount of self pity. Half the battle with learning the song is just becoming familiar with the music itself, entirely aside from the playing aspect, and I'm gradually coming to know this one. One other interesting thing I've noticed is the... threshold, for want of a better word, in learning when hitting that point where I remember the song enough to play it at some very slow speed, and can just start repeating it and refining. It's a great feeling to finally be able to practice something, without having to puzzle over which bit comes next. Not that I've memorised this entire break just yet, but I'm doing okay with the start of it.
