I got to Buena Vista around 2 PM on Friday and looked for Dave's campsite. Lynn Osmond and Dean said it was just past theirs so I knew I was in the right neighborhood (by the river under the trees). Before I found it I ran into a lot of people who had been at the Highland County festival who were camped in the same area. Hounddog Hill was camped right across from me. I walked around to see what was going on and ran into more folks that I knew. Craig and Jill from Harrisonburg and Micky from Bridgewater. I found Dave right where Buz said he would be. After I set up my tent we hung around for a while and then went up to Kay Justice's camp and played some and listened to the singing more. Chip Arnold and Linda came by and I really enjoyed listening to Chip play 2 Finger style in the manner of Will Keys. They also played and sang with Kay. I finally ended up back by Lynn and Dean's camp and played in a high energy jam for a while. Saturday I went to Alex Caton's CD release party and a banjo workshop by Al Tharp. We also went by where Sam Gleaves was camped with some others from Berea College and saw a Kentucky Cheesegrater in action. Kay invited us for dinner so we ate there and played and listened some more. Around 8:00 the picking and sing started with Sam Gleaves and Alex Caton on fiddle, Kay singing and playing guitar and Bill Kimman on bass. At various times Jenna Rosenberg, Alice Shumate, Hannah Johnson and others added their voices to the mix. After not enough sleep I left Sunday morning to meet my wife in Staunton for breakfast. This festival is on my schedule for next year but I will probably get there earlier so I can play more music.
