I find that when I name objects, they tend to last longer than normal. Named my POS car, older sewing machine, random cell phones... etc. Odd, yes. But when I ordered my banjo, I knew it needed a name as well. My mom and I went through about four hours of debating which name fit her (yes, I've decided it's a "she") today.
So, without further ado, meet Edith!
She's an Oscar Schmidt OB-5 (about $180 on Amazon.com). Nothing to brag about, I'm aware. But this was the best my money could buy at this point in life. Maybe in a few years I'll be able to shell out thousands of dollars for a fancy one.

That'll get you started for sure, lot's of great music made with those kinds of banjos...check out the playing of Clyde Troxell & Virgil Anderson, they played similar constructed banjos...enjoy and have fun playing...

Welcome. I have one just like that, which I let a friend borrow. I found after a short period of time the tail piece failed. But it was easy to replace with a $20 tail piece from Ant Hill Music. Mine had a bit of metallic ring to it, but I just put some foam inside and pot and it was much less. Over time I put a wood rim inside it, and it changed the sound alot - for the better. I use 2 small binder clips and some batten for a mute. Most of the stuff I had around the house. Enjoy and keep pickin' Scott

Scott--
Did you do all this yourself? I'm nervous to take anything apart--I'm a bit challenged when it comes to taking things apart and putting them back together correctly :P

I named mine Ethel, after my Great Grandmother. I sold some of the silver coins in the coin collection she left me to buy it. Incidentally, her twin sister's name was Edith. How funny.

Loukiii-- I was going to name mine Bessie after my great grandmother! My mom didn't like it for this banjo though. I'm going to name my next one Bessie (because my next one will be a higher quality/more expensive)

Every time I want to upgrade I feel guilty since I named the banjo after her and used that excuse to help justify selling the silver. LOL
The banjo is a Gibson RB250 so any upgrade would only be cosmetic anyway so I guess I'm stuck with Ol' Ethel... Unless... I had 3 other Great Grandmothers... and Great Grandfathers too! And Grandma's and Grandpa's... But it's only fair I suppose. I wouldn't want my Grandparents to be jealous of each other. It seems like they always were trying to outdo each other when it came to us grandkids. Oh this could get expensive... lol

I've been thinking of a name for my banjo too. I'm thinking "Bertha"
