Las Vegas: ONE MAN BANJO, 2 Grand Pianos...and 3 LEGENDS!

Posted by myork1 on Tuesday, July 2, 2013

What would it be like to play your banjo as an opening act at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for Elton John, Billy Joel and Tina Turner in front of several hundred people? I can honestly say I'd never thought about that one, but that's exactly the opportunity I got when an "idea" hit the executive producer of a LEGENDS show and I went from just playing "solo banjo" in a lounge at the EXPO to getting a 22 minute opening act segment on the main stage. (pictures below)

I spent much of the next 24 hours after I found out about it getting my "show" together and it came off well enough that best I could tell I didn't run off any of the several hundred in the room who'd gathered for the opening reception and to hear the headliners...and "Elton" and "Billy Joel" congratulated me with big smiles as I came off stage, just before they jumped behind their grand pianos for the BIG SHOW! That was some "banjo adrenaline" and about 22 minutes I'll never forget.

Thing is, I could never have done that show, or been ready to go in 24 hours without :

1. Playing Every Day (a goal I set a few years ago, which has made all the difference in my playing/confidence) and 2. Playing in "diners, drive-ins and dives" mostly for the fun of it. Just a couple years ago I could never have pulled it off. But it's amazing how practice days and playing days and little ordinary gigs can lead to huge opportunities.

Here's to the next BIG BANJO DAY for all of us...get out there and PLAY!
