The lessons have begun.

Posted by csims723 on Tuesday, July 10, 2007

Well  I have started my lessons with the first instructor that I found locally. The unfortunate part is he doesn't play the style I wanna learn. I am looking to learn the Scruggs three finger style. He only strums like a guitar. However this might help me to learn the chords and such. I feel like I may be learning bad habits. So I am in the market for another instructor in the Newnan, GA area. I have found another here locally and I am gonna try them out. Did everyone in the Georgia area outside of the mountians have this much fun locating a instructor??? I really have enjoyed the process thus far. I have been learning out of books and videos until I find the right instructor. I did however try to convince my wife to move to Pigeon Forge so I could learn from Gary Davis. No luck. Chris

I say find the guy who teaches what you want to learn. You'll be more enthusiastic and challenged and just enjoy it more.

My teacher had posted an ad on craigslist. Just dumb luck, he is great.

Best of luck to you!

hi chris, i think you would benifit from learning chords and a bit of strumming wont hurt, but if you want to play a certain style you probably need to start as you mean to go on as you will find its harder to un-learn a technique/bad habit than it is to learn it.

and you want to thank your lucky stars you have a choice, over here in england i've spent the last two months trying to find a teacher of any kind and cant find one in my home city at all!

good luck with the lessons my friend

Hi Chris, just wondering what instructor did you find in Newnan? Right now I'm going to Musicology in downtown Newnan, my instructors name is Patrick Thompson, have you tried him, not sure if he is the best in the Newnan area, but he was my first stop, so I'll give him a chance and he does know the Earl Scruggs 3 finger style. Let me know who you think is the best in the area and who to stay away from.

Thanks.
