I just built a banjo. Well actually I have been building it for months -- but I just finished it. The pot is a block rim, maple with a maple burl veneer and rosewood cap. Brass tone ring. I purchased the neck on eBay from a Vietnamese supplier. The neck angle gave me some trouble, but persistence pays off. And I'm already planning the next project -- this time a fretless with a neck that I'll build. The walnut rim is already done and I have a nice piece of mahogany available for the neck. Let's see how many perfectly good pieces of wood will end up in the fireplace before a finished product emerges!
